Scott Joplin (November 24, 1868 – April 1, 1917) was an American composer and pianist, considered to be the "King of Ragtime". He composed more than 40 ragtime pieces; one ragtime ballet; and two operas. One of his first was the "Maple Leaf Rag", which became Ragtime’s first and most influential hit and is believed to be the perfect example of the genre.
