Q & A About The Stanley Unwin Story

Q&A with Anthony Slide, author of A Return To Deep Joy: The Stanley Unwin Story

Who is Stanley Unwin and why a book on him?

It’s a question I am sure just about everyone in the U.S. is asking. In response, I might question why Stanley Unwin is not known to American audiences. He was a British comedian with a unique act, one that was never replicated. The focus of his performance was that he spoke in double talk, or Unwinese as it was christened. Without rehearsal and without any obvious pause as he thought out his next line, he would speak in a language all his own. He would often begin by asking his audience, “Are you all sitty comftybold to-square on your botty? Then I’ll begin.”

How did his act come into being?

Well, in all probability, it has its origins in such literary and diverse sources as Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll and James Joyce. Stanley Unwin himself began speaking in Unwinese to entertain his co-workers at the BBC, where he was a sound engineer in the 1930s, and then as he told bedtime stories to his three children. He began performing professionally in the 1940s, and then he left the employ of the BBC as a sound engineer in 1949 and became a full-time comedian.

How can one get to known Stanley Unwin’s work?

Well, happily, there is quite a bit of him on You Tube, and, best of all, there is a clip from the 1961 film, Carry On Regardless, in which he is at his best, talking to Sid James, and with Kenneth Williams acting as an interpreter. Stanley needed a “straight man” to take deliverance of his lines, and there were few who could actually understand and respond, as does Kenneth Williams. It’s surprising in a way that one performer who did work well with Stanley is Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and you can find the two of them together also on You Tube.

Anything special about your book?

Yes, it had the cooperation of Stanley’s family, and I am honored that his daughter, Lois, contributed an introduction. I don’t think I could have written the book without her help. I am also grateful to the many individuals who shared a microphone with Stanley through the years, and also provided me with anecdotes.

Stanley Unwin made his “final goodlibode” in 2002, but thanks to You Tube and a handful of films, including his biggest role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, he lives on. And, hopefully, my book, A Return to Deep Joy: The Stanley Unwin Story, will bring his life and career back into focus — and introduce his work to a new generation of Americans.

I met "Tina” via WhatsApp and WeChat, who introduced me to a crypto asset trading platform, Abnas Global. Tina provided links to Abnas Global at https://www.abnasglobal.com/#/home/modal and https://abnasglobal.cc/#/pc/trade. Tina also told me to download an app for the platform. Following Tina’s instructions, I downloaded the app, opened an account on the platform, transferred crypto assets, and began to trade bitcoins. Eventually, my account showed a balance of more than $2,017,141.86. But when I tried to withdraw funds, Abnas Global demanded that I pay $240,000 in “taxes” or have my assets confiscated. I reached out to Tina, who offered to pay some of the supposed tax, if I paid $100,000 to the platform. Then, Abnas Global demanded a fine of $160,000. Again, Tina convinced me to pay the fine by offering to pay the remaining balance after I paid $140,000 of the fine. Ultimately, I sent the platform more than $1,200,000, this broke me down when I knew I was scammed but all thanks to HACKWEST AT WRITEME DOT COM who helped to recover the money and reviewed the real faces of these scammers which I have reported to the FBI.
